Federal bill proposes sweeping changes to plastic waste and recycling infrastructure
By Sara Shaw • February 21, 2020
“Federal lawmakers last week introduced a sweeping bill designed to phase out single-use plastics and overhaul the recycling infrastructure, holding packaging manufacturers more responsible for reducing waste.
Among the single-use products the bill would prohibit include some takeout food bags, containers, plastic utensils and plastic straws (the latter, except on request). Instead, restaurants would be required to find reusable, compostable or recyclable alternatives.
It has no Republican co-sponsors, indicating the legislation has little chance of passage in the Senate.”
