Instagram Backpedals on Horizontal Scrolling After User Outrage
By Sara Shaw • January 2, 2019
Last Thursday Instagram redesigned its platform for horizontal scrolling—and the plan almost immediately went sideways. The update took users by surprise, and the company has since labeled the refresh, “a bug”. Instead of scrolling through posts vertically, some people were forced to swipe and tap left and right through their feeds, similar to how the app’s “stories” feature works.
Earlier this year, a redesign of Snap Inc.’s Snapchat was met with similar outrage and the company has struggled since.
Facebook is increasingly relying on growth at Instagram, which now has about one billion users, as its flagship social media network has almost reached saturation point.
