KFC Pokes Fun at Instagram Influencers with a Colonel Sanders Version
By Sara Shaw • April 10, 2019
KFC’s latest colonel isn’t a celebrity. It isn’t even a real person. Meet the Virtual Influencer Colonel, a computer-generated, suave-looking guy posting images on Instagram (well, supposedly doing the posting).
The social-media campaign—teased on Twitter and Facebook—spoofs the fame that people and, increasingly, brands, seek out on Instagram. The influencer’s talents and services, according to a humorous take on a media kit, include disruptive business deals, inspirational “collabs” and authentic Gen-Z engagement.
Through April 22, the account also plans to promote partnerships with brands such as TurboTax and Old Spice. Both of those brands work with creative shop Wieden & Kennedy, which has been KFC’s agency for years. Dr Pepper, which is not a W&K client, also plans to do a partnership in a post, KFC says.
