Burger King is Waging a Shadow Campaign Against Wendy’s with Promoted Tweets

Burger King has taken the marketing battle with Wendy’s to a whole new level. Last week, BK announced the addition of spicy nuggets to their menu for a limited time, just after Wendy’s announced they would be taking this beloved item off of their own menu. Later, in a sophisticated and crafty way, Burger King promoted a handful of tweets from disappointed Wendy’s customers who were ranting about the recent spicy nugget removal. This is the first time a company has used promoted tweets to advertise offerings beyond their own products. Burger King has crossed into unchartered Twitter territory and many more are sure to follow.
