Renew Solutions, a company based in London, introduced digital recycling bins that monitor pedestrians through their smartphone. The cans record a unique identification number, known as a MAC address, to identify the phone’s make and model, direction of route, frequency of visits and speed of distance. The bins could be a potential form of targeted media for advertisers; companies could control both their audience and the frequency of ads. Renew installed the bins during the 2012 Summer Olympics. They are currently being used to measure smartphone market share among mobile handheld providers in London.
