DoorDash launches shared ghost kitchen in Silicon Valley

DoorDash is launching “DoorDash Kitchens”, a rent-a-kitchen commissary designed for restaurants looking to expand their off-premise sales in the Silicon Valley without opening a physical restaurant in the pricey region. This 5,000-square-foot facility will house established local and national brands Nation’s Giant Hamburgers, Rooster & Rice, Humphry Slocombe and The Halal Guys. The shared kitchen will have a dedicated pick up area for delivery, as well as an area for each brand to accommodate carryout orders and large group orders.

Each restaurant pays a rental fee for the kitchen space, in addition to a negotiated commission fee for each delivery or carryout order. DoorDash will also be able to use this marketplace to create “cross merchant” promotions for the four restaurants. The “Shared kitchen” is one of the many ideas in motion to strengthen DoorDash’s lead as the top third-party food delivery player.
