How Burger King Turned Documentary Footage of Andy Warhol Eating a Whopper Into Its Super Bowl Ad
By Sara Shaw • February 6, 2019Burger King just aired 37-year-old footage of art icon Andy Warhol eating the company’s signature burger, the Whopper, during the Super Bowl. While doing research for the fast-food chain, creative shop David Miami unearthed footage from the 1982 documentary 66 Scenes in America by director Jorgen Leth. Burger King secured approval to use the footage for the ad, which aired during the fourth quarter of the Big Game, from The Andy Warhol Foundation.
Burger King’s global CMO Fernando Machado said, “I can think of very few people who are as iconic as Andy Warhol. He is someone who leveraged advertising to do art and here we have an opportunity to leverage art to do advertising. We thought that would be beautiful. On top of being creative and different, we believe it truly elevates the Whopper to its iconic stature.”
